Random Notes

Hi All,

Sorry I've been away, and I promise a major piece soon. In the meantime here are some thoughts.

I don't know what to make of Barack Obama's choices for his cabinet. They seem boring, uninspired, and mundane. Leftists are angry -- but, then again, when aren't they angry? -- and that points up the problem of electing someone based on looks, rhetoric and nothing more than "hope" and "change."

Still, Obama is adept at placating people with fig leafs and doing exactly what it is he wants. Susan Rice at the UN -- and the United Nations being raised to a cabinet level post is frightening from this self-proclaimed "citizen of the world," as is his plans for a new-new-new deal and his efforts to turn twenty-thousand troops agaist American citizens as well as his forced conscription into a "volunteer" force to, I assume, "organize communities" in the same way he did in Chiicago. I fear for the leftist's efforts to stifle free speech via the Orwellian named "Fairness Doctrine" and other elitist efforts to control the populace. He doesn't need anyone but the Chair of the FCC to dictate such thought control policies and he'll let Congress take the lead on promoting his leftist agenda that does an end-run around his "advisors."

Obama is nothing if not sneaky. I take his cotterie of mostly mediocrities and weaklings as nothing more than cover for his and Congress' far-leftist agenda.

Hard to disagree. A lot of conservatives are taking heart from the various 'centrist' appointments; wrongly in my opinion. The real action will occur in the unremarked (by the MSM) second tier placements. That's where conservative bloggers can make a difference.

This is so unhinged, it's amazing. I repeat, no one is trying to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. It's a strawman.

Turn 20,000 troops against americans? you're raving.

and my favorite, the "forced" volunteer corps, even though it's not forced at all.

can't you people read? you know, reading comprehension?!

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are nobody? If you say so.

Rahm Emanuel has some news for you on the 'voluntary community service' thing, as well. He would find your subsequent shock mildly amusing.

business as usual from Obama crowd... said...

AP CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on Tuesday on charges that he brazenly conspired to sell or trade the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama to the highest bidder.

Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field, according to a federal criminal complaint. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper's editorial board who had been critical of him fired.

A 76-page FBI affidavit said the 51-year-old Democratic governor was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

Otherwise, Blagojevich considered appointing himself. The affidavit said that as late as Nov. 3, he told his deputy governor that if "they're not going to offer me anything of value I might as well take it."

"I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain," Blagojevich allegedly said later that day, according to the affidavit, which also quoted him as saying in a remark punctuated by profanity that the seat was "a valuable thing — you just don't give it away for nothing."

The affidavit said Blagojevich also discussed getting a substantial salary for himself at a nonprofit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions.

It said Blagojevich also talked about getting his wife placed on corporate boards where she might get $150,000 a year in director's fees.

He also allegedly discussed getting campaign funds for himself or possibly a post in the president's cabinet or an ambassadorship once he left the governor's office. He noted becoming a U.S. senator might remake his image for a possible presidential run in 2016, according to the affidavit. And he allegedly said a Senate seat would also provide him with corporate contacts if he needed a job and present an opportunity for his wife to work as a lobbyist.

"I want to make money," the affidavit quotes him as saying in one conversation.

The affidavit said Blagojevich expressed frustration at being "stuck" as governor and that he would have access to greater resources if he were indicted while in the U.S. Senate than while sitting as governor.

U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said in a statement that "the breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering."

"They allege that Blagojevich put a for sale sign on the naming of a United States senator," Fitzgerald said."

Messages left for Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero and at the governor's press office were not immediately returned Tuesday morning.

Among those being considered for the Senate post include U.S. Reps. Danny Davis and Jesse Jackson Jr.

The affidavit outlined a Nov. 10 call between Blagojevich, his wife, his chief of staff — John Harris, who also was arrested Tuesday — and a group of advisers in which Harris allegedly suggested working out an agreement with the Service Employees International Union.

Under the plan, Blagojevich would appoint a new senator who would be helpful to the president-elect and in turn get a job as head of Change to Win, a group formed by the union. The union would get an unspecified favor from Obama later.

Nothing in the court papers suggested Obama had any part in the discussion. In fact, Blagojevich allegedly said in the same conversation that Obama most likely would not appoint him as secretary of health and human services or to an ambassadorship because of the negative publicity that has surrounded the governor for three years.

One day later, according to the affidavit, Blagojevich allegedly told an associate he knew Obama wanted a specific Senate candidate but "they're not going to give me anything except appreciation." He finished the remark with an expletive.

Blagojevich also was charged with using his authority as governor in an attempt to squeeze out campaign contributions.

Corruption in the Blagojevich administration has been the focus of a federal investigation involving an alleged $7 million scheme aimed at squeezing kickbacks out of companies seeking business from the state. Federal prosecutors have acknowledged they're also investigating "serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud" under Blagojevich, who has a $177,412 salary, though it's unclear whether he accepts the total.

Political fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko who raised money for the campaigns of both Blagojevich and Obama is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of fraud and other charges. Blagojevich's chief fundraiser, Christopher G. Kelly, is due to stand trial early next year on charges of obstructing the Internal Revenue Service.

According to Tuesday's complaint, Blagojevich schemed with Rezko, millionaire-fundraiser turned federal witness Stuart Levine and others to get financial benefits for himself and his campaign committee.

Federal prosecutors said Blagojevich and the chairman of his campaign committee have been speeding up corrupt fundraising activities in the last month to get as much money as possible before the end of the year when a new law would curtail his ability to raise contributions from companies with state contracts worth more than $50,000.

According to the affidavit, agents learned Blagojevich was seeking $2.5 million in campaign contributions by the end of the year, with a large part allegedly to come from companies and individuals who have gotten state contracts or appointments.

The affidavit also outlines Blagojevich conversations related to Tribune Co., which has been hoping to sell Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs which the publishing giant also owns.

Blagojevich was quoted in court papers as telling Harris in a profanity laced Nov. 4 conversation that his recommendation to Tribune executives was to fire the editorial writers "and get us some editorial support."

Harris is quoted as telling the governor Nov. 11 that an unnamed Tribune Owner, presumably CEO Sam Zell, "got the message and is very sensitive to the issue."

The affidavit said Harris quoted a Tribune financial adviser as saying cuts were coming at the newspaper and "reading between the lines he's going after that section," apparently meaning editorial writers. Blagojevich is quoted as saying: "Oh, that's fantastic."

"Wow," Blagojevich allegedly replied. "Keep our fingers crossed. You're the man. Good job, John."

Harris allegedly told Blagojevich in his conversation with the financial adviser he had singled out deputy editorial page editor John McCormick as "somebody who was the most biased and unfair."

After hearing that, Blagojevich allegedly stressed to the head of a Chicago sports consulting firm that it was important to provide state aid for a Wrigley Field sale.

Blagojevich took the chief executive's office in 2003 as a reformer promising to clean up former Gov. George Ryan's mess.

Ryan, a Republican, is serving a 6-year prison sentence after being convicted on racketeering and fraud charges. A decade-long investigation began with the sale of driver's licenses for bribes and led to the conviction of dozens of people who worked for Ryan when he was secretary of state and governor.

FBI spokesman Frank Bochte said federal agents arrested the governor and Harris simultaneously at their homes at 6:15 a.m. and took them to the Chicago FBI headquarters.

He did not have any details about Blagojevich's arrest, only that he was cooperative with federal agents.

"It was a very calm setting," he said.

The governor was to appear later Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan to answer the charges. The time was not immediately set.

The Fairness Doctrine is not a strawman. It should be reinstated immediately. And, a couple of Democratic Senators have come out for it,despite what the Salon article stated. The question really is why should the right wing fear giving equal time to opposing points of view. I sure wish that we'd had the Fairness Doctrine when the administration was talking America to war with their constant stream of "military analysts" on all of the airwaves. I believe I'm going to write my Congressman right now about this very important issue.

They got Blago because Rahm outed the scumbag. He had a personal hatred for Obama and called Obama a "motherfu**er" for wanting him to appoint an official that the governor either did not like or wouldn't receive money from.

Anyway, good riddance to the filthbag.

The GOPS hang on to those kind of thieves and try to re-elect them even AFTER they've been convicted of like, uh, SEVEN felonies.

Anonymous said...

Well, from what I've read the Fairness Doctrine would not work very well anymore, anyway, but to hear these fools talk about how making sure all sides are heard amounts to repression of free speech shows you how truly degraded their tiny minds are.

They deathly fear having the other side heard as antidote to their endless hate radio -- activity.

Exactly. liberal blogs are leading with the Blago story. Had this been a Repug governor, Malkin & Co. would already be making excuses for the perp, attacking Pat Fitzgerald, etc.

In their defense, however, Dora, they must run felons because they have no one else to run.

While the Dems have had about the standard number of crooks the last few years, the GOP has had a crime wave unprecedented in history...and of course, their biggest thugs, the Neocon cadre, are temporarily out of reach for the war crimes tribunal they should someday face.

LOL! I guess none of you scumbags is old enough to remember the demonization of Ken Starr. How about the conviction of Nancy Pelosi's Mom? Her brother? They never got her Dad.

Fitzgerald is working his way up the prosecutorial food chain. The only big fish left are Daley and Obama. We'll hear from Blago again just before his sentencing hearing in about a year.

Thanks, Tony Rezko!

Watch your back, Barack! ;-)

Obama Derangement Syndrome
Shut up about the birth certificate.

By David Horowitz

The continuing efforts of a fringe group of conservatives to deny Obama his victory and to lay the basis for the claim that he is not a legitimate president are embarrassing and destructive. The fact that these efforts are being led by Alan Keyes, a demagogue who lost a Senate election to the then-unknown Obama by 42 points, should be a warning in itself.

The birth-certificate zealots are essentially arguing that 64 million voters should be disenfranchised because of a contested technicality as to whether Obama was born on U.S. soil. (McCain narrowly escaped the problem by being born in the Panama Canal zone, which is no longer American.)

What difference does it make to the future of this country whether Obama was born on U.S. soil? Advocates of this destructive campaign will argue that the constitutional principle regarding the qualifications for president trumps all others. But how viable will our Constitution be if five Supreme Court justices should decide to void 64 million ballots?

Conservatives are supposed to respect the organic nature of human societies. Ours has been riven by profound disagreements that have been deepening over many years. We are divided not only about political facts and social values, but also about what the Constitution itself means. The crusaders on this issue choose to ignore these problems and are proposing to deny the will of 64 million voters by appealing to five Supreme Court Justices (since no one is delusional enough to think that the four liberal justices are going to take the presidency away from Obama). What kind of conservatism is this?

It is not conservatism; it is sore loserism and quite radical in its intent. Respect for election results is one of the most durable bulwarks of our unity as a nation. Conservatives need to accept the fact that we lost the election, and get over it; and get on with the important business of reviving our country’s economy and defending its citizens, and — by the way — its Constitution.

In a complaint filed Thursday in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Kenneth J. Connor said that his reappraisal of Rita Rezko's property was replaced with a higher one and that he was fired when he questioned the document.

It's true, the hysterical barking about the Fairness Doctrine, the "forced volunteering," that Obama will force you to keep your temperature in your house low, and to use one sheet of toilet paper, it all sounds very much like Obama Derangement Syndrome.

And now with the Blago indictment, there will NEVER BE AN END to speculation on the right that Obama was somehow involved, even if a LOT of evidence is produced to show that he was not involved at all. I'm not saying that will necessarily happen, but what I am saying is that EVEN IF IT DOES, the right will never stop speculating and accusing Obama over this.

And even if the Blago thing goes away, just like during Clinton's tenure, the right will continue to create false scandals to ensnare Obama somehow.

Don't forget that Obama is going to take away your guns. Hahaha. Yeah, that was an ad that was run, but of course it will never happen.

the United Nations being raised to a cabinet level post [that would be the ambassadorship, not the U.N.] is frightening...as is his plans [sic] for a new-new-new deal and his efforts to turn twenty-thousand [sic] troops agaist[sic] American citizens as well as his forced conscription into a "volunteer" force [double sic] to, I assume, "organize communities" in the same way he did in Chiicago [sic].... I fear for the leftist's efforts

is there anything that you little rabbits aren't afraid of? after the bush fiasco of an administration... of course not. it is the nature of conservatives to be scared which is why you are such mallable tools. you guys are just too silly!

Fwightened, wittow bunnies...hardeharhar, that's them awrite.

The little twits are afraid the liberals are going to come in and clean up their mess like they did after the last depression and own the country again for fifty years.

That's what they're afraid of.

And they can't write for shit either.

It's coterie with one t. That's another sic for you, Sicette.

These pinheads are sloooooooooow learners. The manufactured scandal factory is not working anymore. Nobody paid any mind to the Rezko/Ayers/Wright crap during the election...and they'll yawn in their stupid faces with the current shrill blither.

In fact, Obama will turn it all in his favor by coming out strong against Count Blagula as he is right now.

And that pathetic Rezko house thing...whadda pathetic, transparent, fucking attempt at another Whitewater...it just makes people sick of the riko freaks trying to poison the country again just when we need to really GET TO FUGGINK WORK.

Lol...hilarious, Suze.

It begs the question; is our Hitler youth learning?

they can't write well because they drop out of high school in the
10th grade. why they wait so long is the mystery. if they'd dropped out in the second grade, at least they'd have eight more years of job experience.
