Notes on the Convention

Hillary did a great job last night...for Hillary. As for Obama, I don't think she could have sent a clearer signal that she does not support him. Not at all. In fact, the speech was one giant FU to BOH.

Those who know politics know that it is the art not just of the spoken but of the unsaid as well. What Hillary didn't say -- as Bill Kristol instantly recognized -- was a single word in praise of Barack Obama. Ms. Clinton was smart. She did what she had to do so as not to be blamed for Obama's inevitable defeat in three months, but nowhere in that talk was there an endorsement of Barack Obama the man.

If Clinton had been defeated by John Edwards or Bill Richardson the speech would have been exactly the same save for the name (and, perhaps, a nod to his latest love child.) It was a Mad-Libs speech, wonderfully delivered, where whenever she got to Barack's name you could almost hear her asking for a "proper noun..."

This entire convention has been one big bust for the Democrats. Halfway through and the two most memorable moments were Hillary's non-endorsement and Michelle playing June Cleaver in one of those typical Democrat moments where an entire lifetime is supposed to be rewritten with one twenty minute performance (think John Kerry's "reporting for duty." act.)

Obama has had a terrible run since the house of cards started to fall with his "Citizen of the World" tour, running through his disastrous "above my pay grade" appearance at the Saddleback Forum, his selling out all that "hope" and "change" stuff for the (failed) political calculus of Joseph Biden and now, halfway through the convention no one has endorsed Barack Obama. Hillary endorsed Hillary and Michelle endorsed a non-existent Ward Cleaver. You get the feeling the only Democrat to get "a little bounce" this week is Bill in some cheap motel. Being in Denver, at least he'll be able to brag that he finally joined "the mile high club."

Yes sir. Michelle was laying it on a little thick with her liftetime bio of "God, Mother, and Country" and "Family Values" schtick, methinks.

It wasn't all that long ago (as far as presidential election cycles go) when the Republicans got booed for essentially saying the same stuff at the '92 Houston convention.

It was called a "hateful," "divisive," and "judgmental" convention (i.e. too whitebread).

The question is, what took Michelle so long to be proud of all that, and then champion it?

She said she felt pride for being an American for the first time this year, so...

Oh, I get it, now.

The psychological term for that is "overcompensation."

"Ward Cleaver." lol

The closest thing to a "Beaver-Cleaver" there was Bill Clinton (if ya know what I mean).

Speaking of Bill, Mr. Sayet said:

"Those who know politics know that it is the art not just of the spoken but of the unsaid as well."

Indeed. Hillary opened with:

"You know, I'm -- I'm here tonight as a proud mother, as a proud Democrat...

(APPLAUSE)

... as a proud senator from New York...

(APPLAUSE)

... a proud American...

(APPLAUSE)

... and a proud supporter of Barack Obama.

(APPLAUSE)

What, no "The proud wife of?"

Democrats don't know how to act like human beings so they get the poll results and then overcompensate.

Remember when Al Gore was told he was too robotic and that he should sigh every once in a while and he sighed so much it was laughable. Then he was told he lacked human warmth and that he should give his wife a kiss...so he nearly rapes her on the podium. remember when Hillary was told she was coming off as not human and that she should laugh now and again and so she went into this robotic cackle that went on and on, mostly at inappropriate times? Remember when BHO refused to wear even the tiniest symbol of his patriotism on his lapel then all of a sudden he's constantly standing in front of EIGHT giant flags?

Now, with the polling showing that Michelle's bitterness, permentant sense of victimhood and hatred for America and Americans showing that it's getting in the way of more power for her and Barry, suddenly she LOOOOOOOVES America and is sooooooo proud...

Wait, who's "BOH"?

Reader's Digest version of Hillary's speech:

Part one:

Come out in front of a blue background wearing look-at-me Dreamsicle orange.

Part two:

"Vote for Obama because he's a Democrat, at least."

Part three:

"Was I supposed to mention Joe Biden?"

"Democrats don't know how to act like human beings so they get the poll results and then overcompensate."

Right on, Mr. Sayet. Big time. And they did the same thing with the military.

The Democrats "loathed" and maligned our armed forces for decades post-Vietnam and earned the reputation of being anti-military (while Reagan brought them out of the Carter Era Frank-Burnsing of them and made them "Be-All-They-Could-Be").

After 9/11 and the resurrection of stifled patriotism, the Left freaked out at all the giant flags draping buildings on Patriot's Day and the mobilization for war and howled "MILITARISM!" and "FASCISM!" while attacking the troops as torturing, terrorizing, and murderous storm-troopers of "Reicho" Hitler Bush.

Their literal chickens came home to roost when they got steamrolled in the '02 midterms precisely because of their well-earned reputation for being soft on the military, weak on Foreign Policy, and appeasing to terrorists.

So they overcompensated in '04 by dolling-up "War Hero" G.I. Johnny Kerry (who "reported For Duty" at the '04 convention).

That was funny, especially when all of Kerry's Swiftboat peers came out of the woodwork and outed him as a fraud.

Yes, and in contrast, McCain is the exact opposite of phony. He believes what he says and says what he believes. Such a person is actually more open to changing his mind in response to evidence or argument. Because, from long habitual practice, he trusts his own reason.

Besides, whatever else happens, that audio of Obama defending infanticide has killed his chances stone dead. There will be no resurrection for this Messiah.

How the Clinton's Will Destroy McCain

Jack Wheeler

The number of fellow Senators who think John McCain is psychologically unstable is large. Some will admit it publicly, like Thad Cochran who says, "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine."

Others relate times when McCain screamed four-letter obscenities right in their faces in the Senate cloak room, like Dick Shelby, Rick Santorum, or Jim Inhofe. "The man is unhinged," one Senator told me. "He is frighteningly unfit to be Commander-in-Chief."

That John McCain is clinically nuts is scary enough. What worries a small group of GOP Senators and Congressmen even more is a deep and dark skeletal secret in McCain's glorified past to which they are privy, and which the Clintons will use to blackmail him.

They have been having discussions with a Russian whom we'll call "T" for Translator. T's father was the Soviet military intelligence officer who ran the "Hanoi Hilton" prison holding captured Americans during the Vietnam War. One of those prisoners was John McCain.

The GRU -- Glavnoje Razvedyvatel'noje Upravlenije or Main Intelligence Directorate of the Soviet (now Russian) Armed Forces - operated the entire North Vietnamese prison system holding American prisoners of war. GRU officers, all of whom were Russians, oversaw the interrogation of every American POW.

The interrogations themselves were conducted by Vietnamese who spoke some English. After each interrogation session, which could often include torturing the prisoners at the direction of the GRU officers, the Vietnamese interrogator would write a report of the session - in Vietnamese.

These reports had to be translated into Russian. T, a bright teenager living in the GRU compound in Hanoi, had become fluent in Vietnamese, and ended up translating many of the reports and interrogators' notes.

John McCain, flying his A-4 Skyhawk, was shot down over Hanoi on October 26, 1967. Badly injured from the ejection, he was beaten and abused by his captors. In July, 1968, his father, US Navy Admiral J. S. McCain, was made CINCPAC, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command, commander of all US military forces in the Vietnam theatre. Upon learning this, the Vietnamese offered - according to McCain - to release him.

McCain claims he refused, because he demanded all American POWs captured before him be released as well. He thus remained a prisoner when he could have gone home, and was subjected to constant brutal beatings and torture for years: that is the source of the "war-hero" saga making McCain a greater war-hero than any other American POW.

Yet the offer of release would had to have been approved by the GRU overseers of the North Vietnamese - and T does not recall any such offer being made. T admits, however, that this took place before McCain was transferred to Hoa Loa prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton" by the POWs. T had only direct knowledge of what happened at Hoa Loa, and not the other prisons, where T's father was in charge.

McCain was kept at the Hanoi Hilton from December 1969 until his release, along with all the remaining POWs, in March of 1973. During this time, T translated all the Vietnamese interrogators' notes and reports regarding John McCain.

According to T, they reveal that McCain had made an "accommodation" with his captors, and in exchange, T's father saw that he was provided with an apartment in Hanoi and the services of two prostitutes. Upon returning to his prison cell, he would say he had been held in solitary confinement. That may be why so many of his fellow prisoners said later they saw so little of him at Hoa Loa.

The notes and reports written in Vietnamese were sent to Moscow, where T was a now a college student, for T's translation into Russian, then placed into GRU archives. That's where they stayed until 1991. Late that year, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, the CIA and the GRU made a deal for a document swap.

All of what it involved, T doesn't know. What T's father, by now retired but still with substantial contacts within the GRU, did learn (and thus T learned) was that the swap included all of T's translations.

In other words, the CIA has in its possession the notes and reports of John McCain's interrogators at the Hanoi Hilton, in both the original Vietnamese and translated Russian, showing collaboration with his Communist captors.

Allegations of this nature have been made over the years, many by Vietnam veterans. There is an even an organization, Vietnam Veterans Against McCain. But they are based on suspicions and circumstantial claims. There has never been any hard direct evidence.

What T says the CIA has is such evidence. Its release would destroy McCain. The threat of its release could force McCain to take a fall, blow the election and lose on purpose. And just who do you suppose would know what the CIA has and work with them to release it?

Someone who has been a CIA asset since he was recruited by London station chief Cord Meyer while a student at Oxford in 1968?

(Back in the 90s years after he retired, if Cord drank a little too much Scotch, he would laugh derisively at those conspiratorialists who accused Bill Clinton of being connected with the KGB.

"They all darkly point to Bill's participation in anti-war peace conferences in Stockholm and Oslo, and his trip to Leningrad, Moscow, and Prague while he was at Oxford. Who could have paid for this?', they ask. It had to be the KGB!' they claim." Cord would shake his head. "What rot - we paid for it. We recruited Bill the first week he was at Oxford. Bill's been an asset of The Three Bad Words ever since." Cord passed on in 2001.)

The small group of Senators and Congressmen who have been briefed by T have been unable to confirm with the CIA any details of its document swap with the GRU beyond an admission that such a swap "may have happened." They are very nervous about pursuing the matter any further.

The Clintons are not nervous. They are utterly ruthless, and have buddies at Langley all too happy to help them.

It has been noted many times here in To The Point that while most folks think the CIA is a right-wing outfit, it is not. The CIA has been dominated by left-wing hyper-liberals for years.

The CIA is a left-wing, liberal outfit, and its main job for some time now is not attacking America's enemies but conservatives in general and George W. Bush in particular. The story is best told by friend, Ken Timmerman in his new book Shadow Warriors.

When the time is right, the Clintons will see to the leaking of the GRU archives on McCain to the media. Bet on it, just as you can bet they'll follow it up with media disclosures of the lady lobbyists in Washington having adulterous affairs with McCain. (There are at least three of them; I know the name of one but I'm not going to put it in writing.)

Maybe McCain will try to fight back by confirming Hillary's well-known bisexuality and her lesbian affair with her beautiful assistant, Huma Abedin. Google "Hillary" and "Huma Abedin" and you'll get almost 6,000 hits. Turns out Huma is a Moslem who grew up in Saudi Arabia and is strongly suspected of working for Saudi intelligence.

Or maybe he'll capitulate to Clinton blackmail. You never can tell what a psychologically unstable guy will do.

And that last point is why - be prepared for this, folks - I would not in any circumstances vote for John McCain, not if either Hillary or Obama were the alternative. Evil is safer than crazy. Leftie amateur inexperience is safer than crazy. So I agree with Ann Coulter who says:

"I'd rather deal with President Hillary than with President McCain. With Hillary, we'll get the same ruinous liberal policies with none of the responsibility."

How in the world can the Republican Party get saddled with a nutcase whack-job who knows nothing about economics, is so anti-capitalist he uses "profit" as a term of derision, has never run a business or had any job outside of government, will raise taxes, is so stupid that he believes "stopping global warming" is worth destroying the American economy, won't drill ANWR, won't appoint strict constructionist justices, won't protect marriage, will give amnesty to 20 million illegal aliens, is beloved by the New York Times, and lives in a delusionary world of vanity and rage?

Rush is right. A McCain presidency will be the destruction of the Republican Party. It needs to be rebuilt, not wiped out with the field clear for the fascists of the left to consolidate power and eliminate freedom.

"I believe McCain's reckless behavior in the past backs me up --that he is riding some serious self-destructive demons."

Can't be half as bad as Bill Clinton's. There's been lots written about that. For years: "Pushing his luck," "pushing the envelope," "Living on the edge," "Tempting fate," "feeling an adolescent invicibility," etc.

And the redfaced, bulging-eyed snapping of his temper.

And Hillary's own temperemental, foul-mouthed, lamp-throwing tirades.

And the vindictiveness of both known-and feared--far and wide.

And then there was the "Swiftboating" of Kerry's military service, which infuriated the already-unhinged Left (because their scheme to become the party of REAL "Patriotism" and military service backfired.

Big time.

Odd that you didn't reference such prototypes as pre-existing exemplars to be avoided.

Unless, of course, you're getting some sort of revenge on their behalf.

It is indeed suspicious that you're peddling this "privileged information" about McCain's "unstable temperament" and his "Manchurian Candidate" activities, and redeeming Clinton's own definitive draft-dodging, his organizing of "antiwar" marches abroad during wartime and his pilgrimage to Moscow in the process by "explaining" that he was a CIA spook and was actually spying on the un-American activities of the repulsive "antiwar" movement.

Bill Clinton, America's own James Bond (at least before Valerie Plame took over that role)?

Did it occur to you that the calculating Clinton was simply self-conscious of his draft-dodging, knew that it would come back to haunt him when he reached for Camelot at the appointed time (a secret ambition he harbored since he was an adolescent), and so threw himself into the antiwar movement with gusto merely to overcompensate for his pure and simple cowardice by unabashedly and ostentatiously being out front and center with the movement to highlight the "courage of his principles?"

Anyway, given the Left's proclivity for projection, vindictiveness, and outright deceit, I'm afraid you strike me as engaging in those very things while posturing as an honest broker and "concerned citizen."

If any of the Manchurian Candidate stuff was true, crack teams of professional dirt-diggers for the Democrats would have had all this on the desks at the NYT, the WP, and MSNBC long ago, and they wouldn't wait until October to use it.

As for McCain's "temper," I wish he'd show more of it.

Ann Coulter says:

on the litmus issues of our time, only partially excluding Iraq, he is a liberal. He apparently excoriated Samuel Alito as too "conservative." He promoted amnesty for 20 million illegal immigrants. He abridged free citizen speech (in favor of the media) with McCain-Feingold.

He opposes [drilling in] ANWR and supports the global warming cult, even posturing with fellow mountebank Arnold Schwarzenegger in front of solar panels. Yes, he supported the surge, along with every other Republican worth mentioning, but he would shut down Guantanamo — the most successful rat trap in our nation's anti-terror fight — and he joins Code Pink in calling the Bush administration "torturers."

Oh yeah, he originally voted against the Bush tax cuts, but now says he would support them. And he libels our miraculous drug companies as "crooks." Can I take a breath?

There is a strutting self-righteousness about McCain that goes hand in hand with a nitroglycerin temper. He flatters himself that his colleagues in the Senate dislike him because he stands up for principle whereas they sell their souls for pork. Not exactly. He is disliked because on many, many occasions, he has been disrespectful, belligerent and vulgar to those who differ with him

His borderline insane outbursts have concerned people even in his own party. Former New Hampshire Republican Senator Robert Smith publicly voiced his concerns, once saying McCain's temper ' ... would place this country at risk in international affairs, and the world perhaps in danger'. That sentiment was echoed by Mississippi Republican Senator Thad Cochran, who told a Boston newspaper: 'The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.'

It's not just McCain's politics that are disturbing. It's his apparently deeply disturbed personality, too. For McCain has a secret reputation as a man with a ferocious, unpredictable temper. He is a man who has a knack for pursuing vendettas against those he thinks have slighted him, especially if they are old and weak or even if they are lowly aides.

The list of worrying incidents is long. In 1995 he ended up almost physically scuffling with aged Senator Strom Thurmond on the Senate floor. And, according to some accounts, in 2006 he had a fight with Arizona congressman Rick Renzi, throwing blows in a scrap whose details have only recently been detailed in Schecter's book. Schecter unearthed another unpleasant incident from 1992 in which McCain, tired after a long day's campaign, reacted badly to his wife Cindy teasing him about his baldness. 'At least I don't plaster on the make-up like a trollop, you cunt,' McCain snapped in front of eyewitnesses. Schecter says he has three sources for the story. McCain's campaign have denied it.

Rick Santorum said in an interview today that he, too, has problems with John McCain's tantrums.

"John McCain has written about and talked about the issues that he has with respect to his temperament and his ability to work with other people and to do so in a way that's productive," Santorum said in an interview after stumping for Romney at Dave & Buster's restaurant.

"This is not something he hasn't spoken about and talked about and admitted to and I think that to me it is a relevant issue for people to consider…I think it's one without question that factors into his ability to govern, to form coalitions and to get things done."

"Santorum said he had personally witnessed problems with McCain's temperament, which he diplomatically declined to detail.

"I don't know anybody in the Senate who hasn't," Santorum said. "Everybody has their McCain story."

It's pretty silly to talk about public figures of long standing as "unstable". Being in public life magnifies any defect to the maximum degree. One has to be extraordinarily stable (if nothing else) to survive in the hot house without falling apart. One thing these people (McCain, Hillary and Bill) is not is unstable. The jury's still out on Obama, though.

Wait, wait. You are trying to accuse Sen. John McCain of having a vindictive nature while glossing over the fact that Pres. These two are the definition of vindictive. They are also pathological liars. Of course, being lawyers, I suppose that's actually a good thing..

John McCain's top ten temper explosions
1) Defending His Amnesty Bill, Sen. McCain Lost His Temper And “Screamed, ‘F*ck You!’ At Texas Sen. John Cornyn” (R-TX). “Presidential hopeful John McCain - who has been dogged for years by questions about his volcanic temper - erupted in an angry, profanity-laced tirade at a fellow Republican senator, sources told The Post yesterday. In a heated dispute over immigration-law overhaul, McCain screamed, ‘F— you!’ at Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who had been raising concerns about the legislation. ‘This is chickens—stuff,’ McCain snapped at Cornyn, according to several people in the room off the Senate floor Thursday. ‘You’ve always been against this bill, and you’re just trying to derail it.’” (Charles Hurt, “Raising McCain,” New York Post, 5/19/07)

2) In 2000, Sen. McCain Ran An Attack Ad Comparing Then-Gov. George W. Bush To Bill Clinton. SEN. MCCAIN: “I guess it was bound to happen. Governor Bush’s campaign is getting desperate, with a negative ad about me. The fact is, I’ll use the surplus money to fix Social Security, cut your taxes and pay down the debt. Governor Bush uses all of the surplus for tax cuts, with not one new penny for Social Security or the debt. His ad twists the truth like Clinton. We’re all pretty tired of that. As president, I’ll be conservative and always tell you the truth. No matter what.” (McCain 2000, Campaign Ad, 2/9/00; www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoXkCprdL4)

3) Sen. McCain Repeatedly Called Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) An “A**hole”, Causing A Fellow GOP Senator To Say, “I Didn’t Want This Guy Anywhere Near A Trigger.” “Why can’t McCain win the votes of his own colleagues? To explain, a Republican senator tells this story: at a GOP meeting last fall, McCain erupted out of the blue at the respected Budget Committee chairman, Pete Domenici, saying, ‘Only an a–hole would put together a budget like this.’ Offended, Domenici stood up and gave a dignified, restrained speech about how in all his years in the Senate, through many heated debates, no one had ever called him that. Another senator might have taken the moment to check his temper. But McCain went on: ‘I wouldn’t call you an a–hole unless you really were an a–hole.’ The Republican senator witnessing the scene had considered supporting McCain for president, but changed his mind. ‘I decided,’ the senator told Newsweek, ‘I didn’t want this guy anywhere near a trigger.’” (Evan Thomas, et al., “Senator Hothead,” Newsweek, 2/21/00)

4) Sen. McCain Had A Heated Exchange With Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) And Called Him A “F*cking Jerk.” “Senators are not used to having their intelligence or integrity challenged by another senator. ‘Are you calling me stupid?’ Sen. Chuck Grassley once inquired during a debate with McCain over the fate of the Vietnam MIAs, according to a source who was present. ‘No,’ replied McCain, ‘I’m calling you a f—ing jerk!’ (Grassley and McCain had no comment.)” (Evan Thomas, et al., “Senator Hothead,” Newsweek, 2/21/00)

5) In 1995, Sen. McCain Had A “Scuffle” With 92-Year-Old Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) On The Senate Floor. “In January 1995, McCain was midway through an opening statement at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing when chairman Strom Thurmond asked, ‘Is the senator about through?’ McCain glared at Thurmond, thanked him for his ‘courtesy’ (translation: buzz off), and continued on. McCain later confronted Thurmond on the Senate floor. A scuffle ensued, and the two didn’t part friends.” (Harry Jaffe, “Senator Hothead,” The Washingtonian, 2/97)

6) Sen. McCain Accused Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Of The “Most Egregious Incident” Of Corruption He Had Seen In The Senate. “It escalated when McCain reiterated the charges Oct. 10 in a cross-examination, calling McConnell’s actions the ‘most egregious incident’ demonstrating the appearance of corruption he has ever seen in his Senate career.” (Amy Keller, “Attacks Escalate In Depositions,” Roll Call, 10/21/02)

7) Sen. McCain Attacked Christian Leaders And Republicans In A Blistering Speech During The 2000 Campaign. MCCAIN: “Unfortunately, Governor Bush is a Pat Robertson Republican who will lose to Al Gore. … The political tactics of division and slander are not our values… They are corrupting influences on religion and politics, and those who practice them in the name of religion or in the name of the Republican Party or in the name of America shame our faith, our party and our country. Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right.” (Sen. John McCain, Remarks, Virginia Beach, VA, 2/28/00)

8) Sen. McCain Attacked Vice President Cheney. MCCAIN: “The president listened too much to the Vice President . . . Of course, the president bears the ultimate responsibility, but he was very badly served by both the Vice President and, most of all, the Secretary of Defense.” (Roger Simon, “McCain Bashes Cheney Over Iraq Policy,” The Politico, 1/24/07)

9) Celebrating His First Senate Election In 1986, Sen. McCain Screamed At And Harassed A Young Republican Volunteer. “It was election night 1986, and John McCain had just been elected to the U.S. Senate for the first time. Even so, he was not in a good mood. McCain was yelling at the top of his lungs and poking the chest of a young Republican volunteer who had set up a lectern that was too tall for the 5-foot-9 politician to be seen to advantage, according to a witness to the outburst. ‘Here this poor guy is thinking he has done a good job, and he gets a new butt ripped because McCain didn’t look good on television,’ Jon Hinz told a reporter Thursday. At the time, Hinz was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party. … Hinz said McCain’s treatment of the young campaign worker in 1986 troubled him for years. ‘There were an awful lot of people in the room,’ Hinz recalled. ‘You’d have to stick cotton in your ears not to hear it. He (McCain) was screaming at him, and he was red in the face. It wasn’t right, and I was very upset at him.’” (Kris Mayes and Charles Kelly, “Stories Surface On Senator’s Demeanor,” The Arizona Republic, 11/5/99)

10) Sen. McCain “Publicly Abused” Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL). “[McCain] noted his propensity for passion but insisted that he doesn’t ‘insult anybody or fly off the handle or anything like that.’ This is, quite simply, hogwash. McCain often insults people and flies off the handle…. There have been the many times McCain has called reporters ‘liars’ and ‘idiots’ when they have had the audacity to ask him unpleasant, but pertinent, questions. McCain once… publicly abused Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama.” (Editorial, “There’s Something About McCain,” The Austin American-Statesman, 1/24/07)

Many senior military officials are less than comfortable with what McCain would do with a middle-of-the-night call.

Several experienced military officers said McCain draws mixed reviews among military leaders, and they expressed serious doubts about whether McCain has the right temperament to be the next president and commander in chief. Some expressed more confidence in Obama, citing his temperament as an asset.

It is not difficult in Washington to find high-level military officials who have had close encounters with John McCain's temper, and who find it worrisome. Politicians sometimes scream for effect, but the concern is that McCain has, at times, come across as out of control. It is difficult to find current or former officers willing to describe those encounters in detail on the record.

"I like McCain. I respect McCain. But I am a little worried by his knee-jerk response factor," said retired Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, who was in charge of training the Iraqi military from 2003 to 2004 and is now campaigning for Clinton. "I think it is a little scary. I think this guy's first reactions are not necessarily the best reactions. I believe that he acts on impulse."

Eaton is hardly alone on this.

"I studied leadership for a long time during 32 years in the military," said retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott Gration, a one-time Republican who is supporting Obama. "It is all about character. Who can motivate willing followers? Who has the vision? Who can inspire people?" Gration asked. "I have tremendous respect for John McCain, but I would not follow him."

"One of the things the senior military would like to see when they go visit the president is a kind of consistency, a kind of reliability," explained retired Gen. Merrill McPeak, a former Republican, former chief of staff of the Air Force and former fighter pilot who flew 285 combat missions. McPeak said his perception is that Obama is "not that up when he is up and not that down when he is down. He is kind of a steady Eddie. This is a very important feature," McPeak said. On the other hand, he said, "McCain has got a reputation for being volatile." [...]

I cannot believe this choice. A man this old, with serious health problems, picks an inexperienced "bimbo" who was on the cover of Vogue, and who is almost totally inexperienced except as gov of a tiny (pop.) state like Alaska. Her ascent to the presidency will be painted as a very likely disaster by the Dems.

Then she has ethical problems in a state where the Republican corruption is endemic and even worse than it has been nationally!! In effect, tying her to that whole corrupt machine.

Probably hoping to pick up disaffected Hillary/feminist voters. Pipe dream.

They'll be on the defensive from day one.

Well, I wasn't voting for Mac anyway...this will make it easier to throw a protest vote to Barr.

I think it was a McBrilliant pick.

So now it's a "tiny" state?

The trolls here had a field day upchucking ad nauseum Alaskan Republican Senator Stevens' problems "In the largest state" and "ha-ha-ha'd" about "The Fall" of Republicans there.

Then McCain elevates the state's female governor to veep status, anyway, and changes the whole dynamic (VERY much in his favor).

Say buh-bye to MILLIONS of women voters.

And Mac knocks Obama off the front-page to boot less than 24 hours after his Avatar Moment.

The Barack Obama convention bounce appeared to be building quite nicely, already a solid 8 pts, according to Gallup's latest tracking poll, and then...

The final bounce, of course, wouldn't be expected to be seen for a couple days, until the numbers come in from polls conducted today. You'd expect a couple more points...

But then, there's the announcement. A shocker, really. I'm listening to the chattering class note that she was on the radar screen, but they're clearly lying.

And in the Obama camp, there have to be concerns about how the choice of Sarah Palin (btw, on Prime Buzz, she just lost her Gov. title, just as the others have lost their Sen. tags. They're all candidates now, and frankly, if you don't know their backgrounds to that extent, well, you aren't on here in the first place) will affect both the final bounce numbers and the dynamic of the race.

True, Obama's is still an historic quest. But now, so is McCain's. If Obama went for vanilla, stability, reliability with Joe Biden,

McCain lobbed a Hail Mary with Palin. Most Hail Mary's, it must be said, fail. But when they connect, they're game changers.

As it stands, John McCain is at 41 percent, Obama 49 percent. It's the biggest poll lead Obama has had in about a month.

But will it get bounced a couple points higher, or will the Palin pick blunt that? Palin has downsides, clearly. First, she's not particularly well known, she has limited experience and, well, to state it again, she's from Alaska.

But she is one heck of a story, and she looks sharp enough thus far. In any case, as one pundit in the office (okay, Steve Kraske) noted as she was being introduced, in a loud, excited voice, "This is a great race. You can't buy fun like this."

At the very least, buckle up. It's gonna be a bumpy ride to November.

John said...

"Oooh, right...OBAMA GOES UP BY EIGHT...jeezus, what a stupid twat."

Did I say that Barack lost his bounce?

No. That was a non-sequitur (dolt).

John said...

"McCain lobbed a Hail Mary with Palin."

No he didn't. He returned a kick-off with a 95-yard sprint downfield for a touchdown.

You're either anti-Palin because she's white (i.e. you're a racist), or she's a woman (i.e. you're sexist).

I think it's both.

John said...

Lotsa luck with that one. Madame Gov wasn't part of that crowd.

Sarah Palin Seen as GOP Rising Star
Only FOX would lie to you so blatantly

FOX-Lies

Excerpt:
Sarah Palin, McCain’s biggest mistake so far, is seen as a rising star within the Republican Party.

That's crazy.
She might be seen as a rising star since this morning, but nobody ever heard of her.
Even Kay Bailey Hutchifelon said, "I don't know much about her" when asked for a reaction.

“Palin is becoming a star in the conservative movement," claims GOP party girl Kellyanne Conway.

Palin is a star the same way Clarence "Slappy" Thomas is - she was appointed to meet a quota.
McCain has made Sarah Palin the future of the party - what Repub is going to be happy with that?

“She’s young, vibrant, fresh and now, and a new mother of five. She should be in the top tier.
If the Republican Party wants to wrestle itself free from the perception that it is royalist and
not open to putting new talent on the bench, this would be the real opportunity.”

Yeah, but trouble is, they don't.
Who thinks the GOP grew up in the last 24 hours?

Palin’s presence adds youth to a McCain ticket...

ha ha

So would a sequoia tree.

Obama's "Not Exactlys":

1.) "Selma Got Me Born."

NOT EXACTLY: Your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965. (Google 'Obama Selma' for his full March 4, 2007 speech and articles about its various untruths.)

2.) Father Was A Goat Herder.

NOT EXACTLY: He was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter.

NOT EXACTLY: He was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.

4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom.

NOT EXACTLY: Your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya . It is the first widespread violence in decades. The current government is pro-American but Odinga wants to overthrow it and establish Muslim Sharia law. Your half-brother, Abongo Obama, is Odinga's follower.

You interrupted your New Hampshire campaigning to speak to Odinga on the phone. Check out the following link for verification of
that....and for more.

*Obama's cousin Odinga in Kenya ran for president and tried to get Sharia Muslim law in place there. When Odinga lost the elections, his followers have burned Christians' homes and then burned men, women and children alive in a Christian church where they took shelter. Obama SUPPORTED his cousin before the election process here started.* Google Obama and Odinga and see what you get. No one wants to know the truth.

5.) "My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian."

NOT EXACTLY: She does her daily Salat prayers at 5 AM , according to her own interviews. Not to mention, Christianity wouldn't allow her to have been one of 14 wives to 1 man.

6.) "My Name is African Swahili."

NOT EXACTLY: Your name is Arabic and 'Baraka' (from which Barack came) means 'blessed' in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama. Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. If elected, he would be the first
Arab-American President, not the first black President. Barack
Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75%
Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. While Barack Hussein Obama's father was from Kenya, his father's family was
mainly Arabs. Barack Hussein Obama's father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father's birth certificate even states he's Arab, not African Negro). 7.) "I Never Practiced Islam."

NOT EXACTLY: You practiced it
daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office.

8.) "My School In Indonesia Was Christian."

NOT EXACTLY:

You were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic
Studies for making faces (check your own book). February 28, 2008 .
Kristoff from the New York Times a year ago: Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it'll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as 'one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.' This is just one example of what Pamela is talking about when she says 'Obama's narrative is being altered, enhanced and manipulated to whitewash troubling facts.'

9.) "I Was Fluent In Indonesian."

NOT EXACTLY: Not one teacher says you could speak the language.

10.) "Because I Lived In Indonesia, I Have More Foreign Experience."

NOT EXACTLY: You were there from the ages of 6 to 10and couldn't even speak the language. What did you learn, how to study the Koran and watch cartoons?

11.) "I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs."

NOT EXACTLY: Except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have
never been anywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience
with our closest allies.

12.) "I Blame My Early Drug Use On Ethnic Confusion."

NOT EXACTLY: You were quite content in high school to be Barry Obama, no mention of Kenya and no mention of struggle to identify - your classmates said you were just fine.

13.) "An Ebony Article Moved Me To Run For Office."

NOT EXACTLY: Ebony has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn't, and never did, exist.

14.) "A Life Magazine Article Changed My Outlook On Life."

NOT EXACTLY: Life has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn't, and never did, exist.

15.) "I Won't Run On A National Ticket In '08."

NOT EXACTLY: Here
you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough
experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.

16.) Voting 'Present' is Common In Illinois Senate.

NOT EXACTLY: They are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.

17.) Oops, I Mis-voted.

NOT EXACTLY: Only when caught by church groups and Democrats, did you beg to change your mis-vote.

18.) "I Was A Professor Of Law."

NOT EXACTLY: You were a senior
lecturer ON LEAVE.

19.) "I Was A Constitutional Lawyer."

NOT EXACTLY: You were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.

20.) "Without Me, There Would Be No Ethics Bill."

NOT EXACTLY: You didn't write it, introduce it, change it, or create it.

21.) "The Ethics Bill Was Hard To Pass."

NOT EXACTLY: It took just 14 days from start to finish.

22.) "I Wrote A Tough Nuclear Bill."

NOT EXACTLY: Your bill was
rejected by your own party for its pandering and lack of all regulation - mainly because of your Nuclear donor, Exelon, from
which David Axelrod came.

23.) "I Have Released My State Records."

NOT EXACTLY: As of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.

24.) "I Took On The Asbestos Altgeld Gardens Mess."

NOT EXACTLY: You were part of a large group of people who remedied
Altgeld Gardens. You failed to mention anyone else but yourself, in your books.

25.) "My Economics Bill Will Help America."

NOT EXACTLY: Your 111 economic policies were just combined into a proposal which lost 99-0, and even YOU voted against your own bill.

26.) "I Have Been A Bold Leader In Illinois."

NOT EXACTLY: Even your own supporters claim to have not seen BOLD action on your part.

27.) "I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year."

NOT EXACTLY: They were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellow Senator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.

28.) "No One on my campaign contacted Canada about NAFTA."

NOT EXACTLY: The Canadian Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your campaign had with them.

29.) "I Am Tough On Terrorism."

NOT EXACTLY: You missed the Iran
Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah
supports the destruction off Israel.

30.) "I Want All Votes To Count."

NOT EXACTLY: You said let the delegates decide.

31.) "I Want Americans To Decide."

NOT EXACTLY: You prefer caucuses that limit the vote, confuse the voters, force a public vote, and only operate during small windows of time.

32.) "I passed 900 Bills in the State Senate."

NOT EXACTLY: You passed 26, most of which you didn't write yourself.

33.) "I Believe In Fairness, Not Tactics."

NOT EXACTLY: You used tactics to eliminate Alice Palmer from running against you.

34.) "I Don't Take PAC Money."

NOT EXACTLY: You take loads of it.

35.) "I don't Have Lobbyists."

NOT EXACTLY: You have over 47
lobbyists, and counting.

36.) "My Campaign Had Nothing To Do With The 1984 Ad."

NOT EXACTLY: Your own campaign worker made the ad on his Apple in one afternoon.

37.) "I Have Always Been Against Iraq."

NOT EXACTLY: You weren't in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time.

38.) "I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care."

NOT EXACTLY: Your plan leaves us all to pay for the 15,000,000 who don't have to buy it.

Today, Murphy announced he would not be joining the campaign:

“I do not expect to join the campaign,” Murphy said. “They’re my friends, and I wish them well.”

I am now starting to believe that there really is no way that Obama can win in November, and it’s not just because of McCain’s slam dunk in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate. Obama’s biggest weakness isn’t his leftist views, the criminals and America-hating sickos he counts as friends, he has already lied his way thru all of that. It’s not even Michelle or even his inexperience. It’s the fact that he doesn’t have the PR skills necessary to get elected DESPITE all of the reasons he shouldn’t be President. Democrats can’t get elected on their ideas, so they pretend to be moderates, and when the mask slips off and their socialist ideals are exposed, they spin, attack their accusers and masterfully cast themselves as victims of a “smear campaign.” Obama has all of the usual baggage of a leftist candidate––just none of the PR skills to make the public forget about it.
A liberal candidate without the skills to maintain the image of being a moderate is dead in the water.

Um, the Palins have three homes....there are some questions about that and about Palin's hubby sitting in on "confidential," executive branch meetigs, some involving oil interests--and emails that he was copied on though he is merely a private citizen and not a member of the Alaskan gov. Also, the Steelworkers have come out against the Palins which kinda works against Todd Palin as a working class dude as he is portrayed by wifey. And now, coincidentally, Todd (who has no college degree, btw) is promoted to a "production supervisor." The Obamas have one home while the Palins, supposedly working-class folks (She has a degree in journalism from the University of Idahohoho--he, as mentioned, none), have three homes.

John said...

Suze "debunked":

"Um, the Palins have three homes...."

The point is not quantity, but quality.

Are any of the Palin's "*gasp* THREE HOMES!!" as ostentatious as the Obama's, with their fancy rooms and marble?

Is someone with "THREE!" Ford Pickups more elitist and out of touch than someone with a Lamborghini?

"...and I'll bet that Mrs. Palin and her husband paid for it themselves and without any help from a convicted felon."

Or tax-payer's money.

"...there are some questions about that and about Palin's hubby sitting in on 'confidential,' executive branch meetigs, some involving oil interests--and emails that he was copied on though he is merely a private citizen and not a member of the Alaskan gov."

Yeah, unlike the notorious, unauthorized Hillary co-presidency (which you voted for twice, and would've voted again for a Clinton Third-Term) running closed-door meetings about a plan to socialize 1/7 of the nation's economy (as First Lady in 1993).

But Palin's hubby sat in on an executive board meeting in Alaska where they talked about--*gasp*--OIL!

Oh, yeah, that's MUCH worse.

"Also, the Steelworkers have come out against the Palins which kinda works against Todd Palin as a working class dude as he is portrayed by wifey."

So you can't--by your logic--be a "working class dude" if your wife-- in her job as governor-- had run ins with the state's proletariats?

Both the Palins belong to unions, btw.

But I'm pretty damn sure that the whole point of your little expose' about the steelworkers was to dilute and deflect from that very fact.

"And now, coincidentally, Todd (who has no college degree, btw)..."

So? Neither do millions of "working class dudes" (mostly minorities).

You first posture as some Rosa Luxemburg condemning propertied Todd because he was not an authentic "working class dude."

Then, without batting an eyelash, you turn on a dime and sneer that Todd was TOO working class for a snooty Marie Antoinettesque debutante like yoursef (because "He didn't go to college").

You just gave up the game.

You're a typical liberal who's a material elitist and actually feels contempt for the very same "working class dudes" who the Obamas and Bidens tried to prove damn hard they were part of while simultaneously executing a plagiarised strategy of labeling McCain--and now the Palin's with their "THREE HOUSES--the "true elitists."

And this for the sake of the strategy meant to deflect attention away from the fact that there are two liberal senators from above the Mason-Dixon line running for President and Vice President of a country that historically has denied liberal northerners the presidency because anyone with common sense knows that they are the true, out-of-touch elitists.

It was part of that very strategy which compels you now to force a wide a wedge as possible between the "elitist" Palins and the REAL "working class dudes" by harping on Sarah Palin's dispute with steelworkers.

Unfortunately, being a young, dumb, liberal chick, in the next breath you betray the charade by clumsily going off message and blurting out your own true, elitist character, sneering snidely that Todd is "uneducated" (if not uneducable).

Which means you know that they're the real thing, and Obama, Biden, and yourself are NOT (vis-a-vis comaraderie with--if not genuine compassion for-- "working class dudes"--You know, the Red Staters you supposedly--and suddenly-- love).

"...is promoted to a "production supervisor."

You mean like John Edward's girlfriend?

He could very well have been Obama's veep, who you'd vote for.

"The Obamas have one home..."

It's called a "mansion."

"while the Palins, supposedly working-class folks (She has a degree in journalism from the University of Idahohoho--"

See? There you go again. While trying to argue that the Palins are as "elitist" as the McCains, you unwittingly destroy your own argument by giving in to the irresistable impulse to condescendingly sneer at Red State Idaho, forgetting in your emotional flash that your supposed to stick to the story about the Palins being really "out-of-touch" elitists.

And so I ask you, nitwit, are "uneducated" Todd from boondock Alaska and his wife who went to college in "Idahoohoo" yokel enough for the "working class dudes" to relate to (and vote for), or too propertied (i.e. "out-of-touch" and "elitist") for them? (and as if Obama and Biden are not.)

I suggest you make up your mind next time you try to argue one or another and try to stick to the script.

Otherwise, you come off as mixing up the themes because you're lying through your teeth.

You know very damn well, madame, that the old "out-of-touch" charge--always directed at the "Party of the Rich" from the party of "The People" (who presumably are helpless indigents whose "Children" can't even get a good free lunch at a public school cafeteria without Republicans cutting the school budget and substituting ketchup for vegetables so they can give more tax-cuts to corporations, or somesuch bullshit)--had a gunshot marriage to the word "elitist" that the mansion-dwelling, wind-surfing, tax-sheltering, limosine liberals had tattooed to their foreheads.

...with the elitist liberals themselves presiding as chaplains over the wedding ceremony.

"'Out-of-touch elitists'? Who, us? It's not us, IT'S THEM! LOOK HOW MANY HOUSES THEY OWN WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS LOSING THEIRS!" (while they hide their tattoo with lipstick).

Joe Biden rides Amtrak everyday to work!

Furthermore, as a footnote, you have obviously been exposed to the liberal underground "It's okay to be an elitist!" campaign from a few years back, when some illiterate idiot high on the food chain thought that they were being clever by thinking that "elitist" was the same as "elite."

I remember a few years back one Loud & Proud liberal--having obviously caught wind of the "clever" talking point--boasting "Yeah, that's right, I'm an elitist! What of it?"

Unfortunately, one quick look in the dictionary knee-capped that horse not long after it left the starting gate, and you didn' hear too many liberals still betting on it.

...except for those waaaaay behind the curve.

Like you, Suzey, who made sure to divorce "out-of-touch" from "elitist" because you still want custody of that Little Lord Fauntelroy, forgetting that he's completely out-of-touch with the other Children while you simultaneously claim to champion their parents (i.e. The People).

The well-demonstrated fact that you still cling to the brat-- oblivious to your solecistic folly-- proves not only that you are--like a typical liberal--an out-of-touch elitIST (which, again, is NOT the same as actually being elite), but also, I daresay, a clueless bimbo.

That was certainly funny, and inspired many lols.

...FIRST.

Ergo: "I know you do (i.e. make laughable claims about foreign policy experience), but what do we?"

Your psychological defense mechanisms are in overdrive.

Enjoy Obama's expected, post-convention bounce, because it's all downhill for you after St. Paul.

The country is going to fall in love with Sarah Palin, Madame Governor of the Great State of Alaska.

And it's going to become apparent that in Mac we have an older Tom Cruise from *Top Gun.*

Then there's--*GULP*--the Town Hall debates.

I really hope, for your sakes, that Biden shares some of his secrets on how he overcame stuttering with "Ah-Ah-Oh-Ah-Uh-Uh" Obama before then.

Maybe they'll take advantage of his big ears by hiding a microphone in one of them and whisper stuff (while he stalls by stuttering until he gets the full instruction).

I highly doubt, though, that the MSM will devote any time--this time--to investigating any pictures of Obama's backside that hint at the outline of a wire.

And you can count on an October Surprise or two (if not three or four) hogging the headlines during the home stretch.

And then there's the Clintons.

Will they lay low and stfu but be accused in endless editorials about not wanting Obama to win by their silence?

Or will they try TOO DAMN HARD to "prove" that they want Obama to win?

Either scenario, I'm afraid, will only spell trouble for the Hope and Changer.

Those bones he tossed to them at the convention aren't nearly enough incentive to get them fully aboard--and behind-- his candidacy.

It would've helped if he helped pay off the massive debt Hillary accrued trying to beat him, as she shamelessly tin-cupped him for.

I sincerely applaud him for apparently FU-ing her in that situation (as in others), but make no mistake: Billary is going to make him pay, one way or another.

Billary is the Frankenstein monster you yourselves created, and, as in the story, it's going to turn on its maker if it doesn't get its way.

Did you see the recent video, btw, where Bill goes in to plant a smooch on Hillary and she turns away and kisses Obama instead, leaving Bill kissing air?

That was priceless.

They're the gift that keeps giving.

Cold Water on Palin [Ramesh Ponnuru]
Both the pros and the cons are pretty obvious. I’m going to focus on the cons, mostly because conservatives right now seem to be paying them less attention.
The pros: She’s a pro-life conservative reformer from outside Washington, and a woman. The pick signals a boldness and willingness to mix things up that the McCain campaign, like Republicans generally, need.

The cons:

Inexperience. Palin has been governor for about two minutes. Thanks to McCain’s decision, Palin could be commander-in-chief next year. That may strike people as a reckless choice; it strikes me that way. And McCain's age raised the stakes on this issue.

As a political matter, it undercuts the case against Obama. Conservatives are pointing out that it is tricky for the Obama campaign to raise the issue of her inexperience given his own, and note that the presidency matters more than the vice-presidency. But that gets things backward. To the extent the experience, qualifications, and national-security arguments are taken off the table, Obama wins.

And it’s not just foreign policy. Palin has no experience dealing with national domestic issues, either. (On the other hand, as Kate O’Beirne just told me, we know that Palin will be ready for that 3 a.m. phone call: She’ll already be up with her baby.)

Tokenism. Can anyone say with a straight face that Palin would have gotten picked if she were a man?

Compatibility. It doesn’t seem as though McCain knows Palin well. Do we have much reason to think they would work well together?

Debates. Maybe, as Jonah said the other day, Biden will look like a bully going up against her—and maybe she’ll shine. But I can think of a lot of other picks who would have been lower-risk.

I am not even sure that the pick will have quite the galvanizing effect on conservatives that it seems to be having now as it sinks in. The concerns I’ve mentioned here—about her readiness and her credentials—are the kind of thing that many conservative voters take seriously.

Now, as I said, there are pros too. Maybe Palin will be a terrific candidate and vice president. But let’s not underestimate the potential downside.

Tokenism! From the party that loves to hate them some affirmative action!!!

It just gets funnier and funnier:

Palin thinks Pledge written by Founding Fathers
by JLFinch
Sun Aug 31, 2008 at 02:56:04 PM PDT
Good lord, this woman is a female George Bush.

Here is Palin's response to a candidate questionnaire for the Alaska 2006 gubernatorial race:

Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
SP: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance

JLFinch's diary :: ::
Ok.

First, the Pledge of Allegiance was not written by the Founding Fathers. It was written much later. Secondly, the words "under God" were not originally part of the Pledge. "Under God" was added even later.

Wikipedia on the Pledge of Allegiance:

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian Socialist, and the cousin of Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850-1898).

Bellamy's original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8th issue of the popular children's magazine The Youth's Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, conceived by James B. Upham.

Bellamy's original Pledge read, "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

...

In New York City on April 22, 1951, the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus adopted a resolution to amend their recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of each of the meetings of the 800 Fourth Degree Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus by addition of the words "under God" after the words "one nation." In the following two years, the idea spread throughout Knights of Columbus organizations nationwide. On August 21, 1952, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus at its annual meeting adopted a resolution urging that the change be made universal and copies of this resolution were sent to the President, the Vice President (as Presiding Officer of the Senate) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The National Fraternal Congress meeting in Boston on September 24, 1952, adopted a similar resolution upon the recommendation of its President, Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Several State Fraternal Congresses acted likewise almost immediately thereafter. This campaign led to several official attempts to prompt Congress to adopt the Knights of Columbus’ policy for the entire nation. These attempts failed.

...

After the service concluded, Docherty had opportunity to converse with Eisenhower about the substance of the sermon. The President expressed his enthusiastic concurrence with Docherty’s view, and the very next day, Eisenhower had the wheels turning in Congress to incorporate Docherty’s suggestion into law. On February 8, 1954, Rep. Charles Oakman (R-Mich.), introduced a bill to that effect.

And just FYI on the timing of the Founding Fathers:

The signatories of the Declaration of Independence are often called "Founders," and the delegates of the Philadelphia Convention which prepared the Constitution are often called "Framers." According to Joseph J. Ellis, this concept emerged in the 1820s as the last survivors died out. George Washington was always the dominant figure. He was joined by John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and after that, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, George Mason, Samuel Adams, and others. Ellis says the "the founders," or "the fathers" comprised an aggregate of semi-sacred figures whose particular accomplishments and singular achievements were decidedly less important than their sheer presence as a powerful but faceless symbol of past greatness.

For the generation of national leaders coming of age in the 1820s and 1830s — men like Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun — "the founders" represented a heroic but anonymous abstraction whose long shadow fell across all followers and whose legendary accomplishments defied comparison. "We can win no laurels in a war for independence," Webster acknowledged in 1825. "Earlier and worthier hands have gathered them all. Nor are there places for us ... [as] the founders of states. Our fathers have filled them. But there remains to us a great duty of defence and preservation."

Stupid is as stupid does, Governor.

Palin backed abstinence-only education Posted: Monday, September 01, 2008 1:27 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: 2008, Palin
From NBC's Katie Primm and Mark Murray
By the way, as has been pointed out, Palin backed abstinence-only education during her 2006 gubernatorial race. In an Eagle Forum Alaska questionnaire, Palin gave this response to the following question:

Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?

Palin: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Abby Livingston adds that a McCain spokesperson in May 2007 said the Arizona Republican supported abstinence-only education, too. "Sen. McCain believes the correct policy for educating young children on this subject is to promote abstinence as the only safe and responsible alternative. To do otherwise is to send a mixed signal to children that, on the one hand they should not be sexually active, but on the other here is the way to go about it. As any parent knows, ambiguity and equivocation leads to problems when it comes to teaching children right from wrong. Sen. McCain believes that there are many negative forces in today’s society that promote irresponsible and dangerous behavior to our children. The public education system should not join this chorus of moral equivocation and ambiguity.”

Why take them off the table, Ramesh? The "inexperienced" Palin is more experienced than Obama in public service, and she's running for veep, not POTUS.

John said...

"...as Mr. Palin fondly refers to his wifey--or Harriet Miers,as some of us have come to think of her."

Right. In the last 48 hours.

Actually, that's a bad analogy.

Conservatives had a problem with her.

The proper equivalent is the selection of Bush 41's veep Dan Quayle, which was actually not a bad choice-- until the latter's budding gravitas was nipped in the bud and destroyed by a vicious, whithering, unwarranted, and unrelenting attack on his character within 48 hours of the selection-- which was so effective that I must confess that I myself can't help but suppress a chuckle everytime he pops up.

What you were doing there--as before and since-- was following Alinsky's Rules for Radicals #8: "'Keep the pressure on. Never let up.' Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)"

(thanks fj & Andronicus)

That's right, the cat was let out
of the bag long ago, and it's not going to work again. It's just an old--and tiresome--Marxist ploy, like RULE 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." There is no defense. It's irrational. It's infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)"

So keep aggressively posting the Kool Aid from Daily Kos and Moveon, and persist in your heckling "hahahahahahas."

It only identifies exactly where you're coming from, and has nothing to do with the veracity of the Kool Aid (no less any principle behind it that you actually subscribe to) or the deserving of ridicule.

They're just sleazy, Marxist tactics that hope to win "by any means necessary." (Malcolm X)

What the lefty trolls don't understand is that, despite the thousand faces they wear here to hide their true identity and sow strife and detonate i.e.d.s like masked terrorists, they're transparent and you can see right through them.

So brainwashed are they and enslaved to the service of their subversive cause that they don't pause to wonder if their robotic behaviorial patterns have already been discerned and their programming discovered.

They just keep doing it. The opening rebuttle to this will probably very well be "hahahaha," which--like almost all of the tactics-- is merely a psychological defense mechanism converted into an offensive weapon.

They can't think outside the box they're in, so even when the tactics are unmasked for what they are--i.e. sleazy, Marxist tactics--all they can do is robotically pick-up the pace of importing cut-&-pasted Kool Aid and heckling out their "hahahahas," confident that "A lie told enough times will eventually be believed"--as they readily (being well familiar with the tactic) accused the Bush administration of engaging in when the latter simply had to repeat the facts over and over again in the attempt to counter the aggressive, mischaracterizing Kool Aid.

The Bush Administration eventually said "fuggit" when they realized--just as you can see here--that the attacking opposition is not interested in reasoning and good faith intercourse, nor that they somehow misunderstood.

They understand what's at stake for their agenda very well, and so they attack that much more rabidly to destroy the matter by their anti-matter substance.

However, persisting in the exposed tactic of "telling a lie enough times until it is believed by the weary citizenry" has turned into a belief that if they just keep doing something that has failed enough times, it will succeed," even if it's something doomed to failure, by its very design, a persistence that Freud diagnosed as insane.

These lefty trolls are mentally ill, and, like most genuinely crazy people, they not only think that they're "normal" (and "in-touch" with real normal people), but simultaneously contradict their Everyman delusion by conceitedly thinking that they are of the elite (though a true elite would never solecistically exult: "I'm an elitist!").

Their illness, though, is not of the type that exhibits itself in erratic, unpredictable behavior (although that's encouraged when executing Rule #8 to keep the opposition reeling), but more the ritualized type of the neurotic, so their behavior is always predictable, robotic, and they all sound as if they came off the same assembly line (beyond the fact that one or two trolls here go by a dozen aliases).

Hence, within 48 hours of Palin's selection, the vats at the Kool Aid factories were feverishly mixed and churned all night and ready for distribution the next day for posting, with the obligatory "hahahahas."

They do it over and over again, same-ol'-same-ol,' and think none's the wiser.

It's kind of sad in the sense that it evokes the once-human beings who were assimilated into the Borg Collective from Star Trek: The Next Generation (they themselves were injected with and made addicted to the very Kool Aid they now peddle, mindlessly muttering "Resistance is Futile"), and you can't help but hope they can be extracted and be salvaged from the hive (like the Borged human Seven from Star Trek: Voyager), but like Picard from the movie Star Tek: First Contact, you feel a natural repulsion at beholding the grotesque subhuman, making a mockery of essential human dignity, and you want to put it out of its misery.

Most of the lefty trolls here come out of that very far left collective hive that even Obama tries hard to keep his distance from (and who he just told to stfu about the Palin family).

Like Borg drones, though, they'll just keep coming, one after another, mindlessly attacking- attacking-attacking, but--aside from being noisy nuisances peddling nonsense--they're feckless once you figure out the frequency their operating on and picking them off one-by-one-- or even 3-5 at a time--is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

...As long as you don't drink the Kool Aid they're constantly trying to pour down your throat and turn into one of them.

That can happen because what differentiates the lefty trolls from the Borg is that, outwardly, they look pretty "normal," so in that sense they're like the Body Snatchers from the movie about the invasion of their namesake.

And so you must be careful when sitting down for an invited cup of tea with one of them, because it might be spiked with the Kool Aid.

I've personally had experiences with the Body Snatchers.

They'll engage in perfectly "normal" conversation with you, but when the subject of politics comes up--and especially if the name "Bush" is uttered-- you will first see their eyes flash and then go dark as a barely-discernible tremor ripples over their face. Then their features twitch uncontrollably and contort and become distorted and, grimacing, their voice changes and they begin to sneer and spew obscenties and vomit their bile, much like Linda Blair as the little girl Regan who was possessed by Satan in the classic horror movie *The Exorcist.*

They call it "passion."

It's possession.

A Shrewd Pick, but a Responsible One?

By David Frum

Through this campaign season, John McCain has faced two ugly problems.

Problem 1: The Republican voter base is shrinking. In percentage terms, fewer Americans now identify as Republicans than at any time since 1980. The "rally the base" strategy of 2004 won't work in 2008. The only way Mr. McCain can win this presidential election is to appeal to independents and the political centre.

Maverick McCain might seem the perfect candidate for that assignment. He has defied Republican orthodoxy on issues from taxes to climate change, and his relationship with George W. Bush has long been famously tense and even hostile.

But that opportunity raises problem number 2:

Mr. McCain is widely distrusted within his own party.

By the time the nomination contests ended, 68% of Democrats expressed satisfaction with Barack Obama as their nominee. Only 52% of Republican expressed satisfaction with John McCain. Mr. McCain has to worry that too much outreach to independents and centrists could provoke and offend his right wing.

Most significantly of all, Ms. Palin reaches out to those working-class women who supported Hillary Clinton's candidacy--and who may not be reconciled to Barack Obama.

The obvious way to solve problem 2 was to pick a running mate who appealed to the right: a Mitt Romney, say. The trouble is that such a choice would alienate those all-important voters in the middle. But the candidates who might appeal to the voters in the middle were usually unacceptable to the right.

It's generally believed that if Mr. McCain had felt free to choose any running mate he wanted, he would have picked either his friend Joe Lieberman or former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge. Mr. Ridge was especially attractive because Pennsylvania will be a very important state this year.

Pennsylvania ties with Illinois as the fifth most lucrative lode of electoral votes: 21 out of the 270 needed to win. Pennsylvania has voted Democratic in the past four elections, and should have been a sure Democratic win this time. But this state has proved very inhospitable to Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton crushed him in the April 22 primary.

It was in large part to secure Pennsylvania that Barack Obama chose the Scrantonborn and Catholic Joe Biden as his running mate. Mr. Ridge, a veteran, a Catholic of Central European origins, and a popular two-term governor, might have tipped the state to the GOP. But Mr. Ridge is pro-choice, and that fact would have triggered the party mutiny that Mr. McCain fears.

So Mr. McCain found himself playing a game of elimination. Ridge out. Romney out. Lieberman out. Giuliani out. Huckabee--way out.

Sarah Palin was the answer to his problem. The party right likes her fierce pro-life convictions. (She is the mother of five. Her youngest has Down syndrome.) The right approves of her support for opening more of Alaska to oil drilling and her broad libertarian approach to public policy.

At the same time, she qualifies as a maverick because of her battles with Alaska's notoriously corrupt local Republican organization--and her very unusual background. She was a local basketball champion and a second-place finisher in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant. Her husband is a production operator for BP Oil, a member of the Steelworkers union and a champion snowmobiler of part-Eskimo background.

Most significantly of all, Ms. Palin reaches out to those working-class women who supported Hillary Clinton's candidacy--and who may not be reconciled to Barack Obama. In her statement yesterday in Ohio, she thanked Hillary Clinton for putting 18 million cracks in the hardest of all glass ceilings --and then pointedly argued that a vote for Mr. McCain was the surest way to smash that ceiling once and for all.

In politics as in life, however, you cannot have everything.

Ms. Palin's experience in government makes Barack Obama look like George C. Marshall. She served two terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska, population 9,000. She served two terms as mayor. In November, 2006, she was elected governor of the state, a job she has held for a little more than 18 months. She has zero foreign policy experience, and no record on national security issues.

All this would matter less, but for this fact: The day that John McCain announced his selection of Sarah Palin was his birthday. His 72nd birthday. Seventy-two is not as old as it used to be, but Mr. McCain had a bout with melanoma seven years ago, and his experience in prison camp has uncertain implications for his future health.

If anything were to happen to a President McCain, the destiny of the free world would be placed in the hands of a woman who until recently was a small-town mayor.

Mr. McCain's supporters argue that he is more serious about national security than Barack Obama. But the selection of Sarah Palin invites the question: How serious can he be if he would place such a neophyte second in line to the presidency? Barack Obama at least balanced his inexperience with Mr. Biden's experience. What is Mr. McCain doing?

Vice-presidents have historically made surprisingly little difference to the outcome of presidential elections. The elder Bush picked Dan Quayle in 1988 in hopes of wooing younger voters, much as Walter Mondale had chosen Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, in an effort to mobilize women, and George McGovern had hoped that Sargent Shriver would stanch his losses among Catholics in 1972.

None of these gambits worked. Ms. Ferraro did not deliver women, Mr. Quayle did not deliver youth, and Catholics defected to Nixon in 1972.

Where vice-presidents--and especially Republican vice-presidents--make an enormous difference is after the election.

Since the Second World War, 10 men have received the Republican nomination for vice-president. Three of those men--Richard Nixon, Bob Dole and George H. W. Bush--continued on to win the presidential nomination for themselves, and two actually became president. (A fourth nominee, Thomas Dewey's 1948 running mate, Earl Warren, rose to arguably even greater power as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. And you could add a fifth case: Gerald Ford went on to the presidency after being appointed vice-president in 1973.)

Should John McCain lose in November, Sarah Palin has just pole-vaulted into frontrunner status for 2012. Should Mr. McCain win, her grip on the next Republican nomination will become a lock.

So this is the future of the Republican party you are looking at: a future in which national security has bumped down the list of priorities behind abortion politics, gender politics, and energy politics. Ms. Palin is a bold pick, and probably a shrewd one. It's not nearly so clear that she is a responsible pick, or a wise one.

I think politicians' families are totally off limits. Children are meant to be seen and not heard about. The second they finish the People magazine photo spread, that's it. Mum's the word. Or grand mum. Or whatever Sarah Palin is.

The Palin Family is private. That's why Sarah Palin never, ever mentions her son in the army. Except for eleven lines into the first speech she ever gave as the nominee.

"Our oldest son, Track, though, he'll be following the presidential campaign from afar. On September 11th of last year, our son enlisted in the United States Army. Track now serves in an infantry brigade. And on September 11th, Track will deploy to Iraq in the service of his country. And Todd and I are so proud of him and of all the fine men and women serving the country in uniform."

Except for his name, rank, serial number, when he enlisted and where he's being deployed, not another word.

...and except for all the flack we hear about what a wonderful family woman she is with five children and all who, afterwards, we are not supposed to mention...and all those mahvlus fambly values and abstinence only pregnant chilluns that we hear all the announcements about...

The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo
By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008, 6:20PM
On the same day that the Republicans were forced to dramatically cut back their convention activities, the Palin Meltdown unfolded with extraordinary speed. It's worth pondering the totality of what happened today, in a mere half day...

* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.

* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.

* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain's Veep candidate.

* The news broke that Palin's 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain's candidacy.

* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin's own spokesperson hadn't known about it only two days ago.

* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy "last week" -- without saying what day last week he knew about it.

* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin -- now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she'd been picked.

* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska -- a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.

Republicans have either taken the line that Bristol Palin's pregnancy is a personal matter for Palin and her family,
or they are suggesting that it is a situation that lots of normal Americans can relate to, either from their own family
history or that or friends and classmates.

"I don't think this is going to be a big deal," said a top House Republican aide with a straight face.

"It's nobody's business but the Palins," added another Senate GOP leadership staffer.

A bitch. Admission of petty vindictiveness noted.

"Vindication" for what, though?

"The personal sex problems of the unknown, unqualified corrupt beauty queen should be as private as the matter of Bill Clinton's semi-sorta girlfriend a decade ago."

You're actually equating the sexual behavior of a candidate's teenaged daughter and her jock boyfriend with a POTUS having an adulterous affair with a White House intern, at the place of work, while at work, on the tax-payer's dime, and committing perjury, subornation of perjury, and obstruction of justice in an attempt to cover it up, crimes that make it a public interest and everybody's business?

"Far from calling it 'a private family matter,' the Fascist dogs in the GOP House called Monica
'a constitutional crisis,' and rallied the other Fascist dogs in the Senate to impeach hm (sic)."

Again, Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin's teenaged daughter got biblical (i.e. did the nasty) with her jock boyfriend.

The buffoon Bill Clinton was a POTUS who had an adulterous affair with a White House intern (who was a few years older than his own daughter), at the place of work, while at work (while on the phone with a congressman discussing military logistics in the Balkans, in fact), and on the tax-payer's dime (except when he did it on a weekend--i.e, Easter Sunday--after he was photo-opped emerging from church piously toting a Bible).

He committed perjury, subornation of perjury, and obstruction of justice in an attempt to cover it all up, crimes that make it a public interest and everybody's business.

If not a "High Crime," would you at least agree that it was a misdemeanor, for chrissakes?

"How serious can he be if he would place SUCH A NEOPHYTE second in line to the presidency?"

How serious can Democrats be if you would place SUCH A NEOPHYTE FIRST in line to the presidency?

DUH!!!

The risk John McCain took last Friday is comparable to the 72-year-old ex-fighter pilot knocking back two shots and flying his F-16 under the Golden Gate Bridge.

McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his co-pilot was the biggest gamble in presidential history. As of now, it is paying off, big-time.

The sensational selection in Dayton, Ohio, stepped all over the big story from Denver – Barack Obama's powerful address to 85,000 cheering folks in Mile High Stadium, and 35 million nationally, a speech that vaulted him from a 2-point deficit early in the week to an 8-point margin. Barack had never before reached 49 percent against McCain.

As the Democrats were being rudely stepped on, however, Palin ignited an explosion of enthusiasm among conservatives, evangelicals, traditional Catholics, gun owners and right to lifers not seen in decades.

By passing over his friends Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge, and picking Palin, McCain has given himself a fighting chance of winning the White House that, before Friday morning, seemed to be slipping away. Indeed, the bristling reaction on the left testifies to Democratic fears that the choice of Palin could indeed be a game-changer in 2008.

(Note: "The bristling reaction on the left testfies to Democratic fears that the choice of Palin could indeed be a game-changer in 2008.")

Liberals howl that Palin has no experience, no qualifications to be president of the United States. But the lady has more executive experience than McCain, Joe Biden and Obama put together.

None of them has ever started or run a business as Palin did. None of them has run a giant state like Alaska, which is larger than California and Texas put together. And though Alaska is not populous, Gov. Palin has as many constituents as Nancy Pelosi or Biden.

She has no foreign policy experience, we are told. And though Alaska's neighbors are Canada and Russia, the point is valid. But from the day she takes office, Palin will get daily briefings and sit on the National Security Council with the president and secretaries of state, treasury and defense.

She will be up to speed in her first year.

And her experience as governor of Alaska, dealing with the oil industry and pipeline agreements with Canada, certainly compares favorably with that of Barack Obama, a community organizer who dealt in the mommy issues of food stamps and rent subsidies.

Where Obama has poodled along with the Daley Machine, Palin routed the Republican establishment, challenging and ousting a sitting GOP governor before defeating a former Democratic governor to become the first female and youngest governor in state history.

For his boldness in choosing Palin, McCain deserves enormous credit. He has made an extraordinary gesture to conservatives and the party base, offering his old antagonists a partner's share in his presidency. And his decision is likely to be rewarded with a massive and enthusiastic turnout for the McCain-Palin ticket. Rarely has this writer encountered such an outburst of enthusiasm on the right.

In choosing Palin, McCain may also have changed the course of history as much as Ike did with his choice of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan did with his choice of George H.W. Bush. For should this ticket win, Palin will eclipse every other Republican as heir apparent to the presidency and will have her own power base among lifers, evangelicals, gun folks and conservatives – wholly independent of President McCain.

A traditional conservative on social issues, Palin has become, overnight, the most priceless political asset the movement has. Look for the neocons to move with all deliberate speed to take her into their camp by pressing upon her advisers and staff, and steering her into the AEI-Weekly Standard-War Party orbit.

Indeed, if McCain defeats Barack, 2012 could see women on both national tickets, and given McCain's age and the possibility he intends to serve a single term, women at the top of both – Sarah vs. Hillary.

The arrival of Palin on the national scene, with her youth, charisma and vitality, probably also portends a changing of the guard in Washington.

With Republicans having zero chance of capturing either House, and but a slim chance of avoiding losses in both, a Vice President Palin, with her reputation as a rebel and reformer, would surely inspire similar revolts in the Republican caucuses.

As Thomas Jefferson said, from time to time, a little rebellion in the political world is as necessary as storms in the physical.

The Palin nomination could backfire, but it is hard to see how. She has passed her first test, her introduction to the nation, with wit and grace. And the Obama-Biden ticket, having already alienated millions of women with the disrespecting of Hillary, is unlikely to start attacking another woman whose sole offense is that she had just been given the chance to break the glass ceiling at the national level.

Her nomination, which will bring the Republican right home, also frees up McCain to appeal to moderates and liberals, which has long been his stock in trade.

With his selection of Sarah Palin, John McCain has not only shaken up this election, he may have helped shape the future of the United States – and much for the better.

Gee, is it time to compare neophytes?

So just how experienced is perennial Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

Palin was Alaska's GOVERNOR, managing the largest state in the union, all the time Obama was playing at being a US Senator (whilst really running for office).
