Evan's Endorsement

Well, the time has come to get off the fence and endorse a candidate. As I last wrote, this is not an easy decision. McCain is in almost every way a bust. In fact, there are only two issues on which he might be thought to have the advantage and I'm not convinced he does.

The first is national security. Yes, he was in favor of "the surge" before it was popular and before it proved the stunning success that it is. He deserves -- and gets -- a lot of points for that.

Yet on every other issue of national security -- from protecting our borders from invasion, to using thoughtful means of eliciting information from terrorists before they murder again, he fails miserably.

On issues related to security, such as drilling for oil at ANWR which would both lessen our dependence on foreign oil almost immediately and, by doing so, deny the terrorists a great deal of funding, he fails miserably too.

I also consider his falling for the canard of global warming, the leftist' effort to shackle "the great Satan" while allowing our enemies and competitors (and Al Gore) to continue to spew pollution at unprecedented rates, a national security failure.

The other issue is, as bad as McCain is on virtually every issue, he's still better than the radical leftists who would surrender Iraq to the terrorists, talk and talk and talk to the Iranians until they have and use nuclear weapons, if for no other reason than that the Democrats hate Jews (explained at length in my forthcoming book).

McCain, the argument goes, has the best chance of beating the radical leftists and keeping the hate-America-always crowd out of power is essential. I don't buy this argument, either. I am not impressed by polls that ALWAYS show Democrats beating Republicans early on (and the fact that a faux Republican, like McCain, is leading against Hillary changes nothing).

The issues, once actually discussed beyond the level of "hope" and "change" and "fear" on the one hand and "Christmas presents under the tree for the children" on the other, sees the Republican close the gap and take the lead as the election turns from polls to ballots.

Romney is right on taxes. McCain not only was against Bush's tax cuts, but slandered those who disagreed with him. The idea that he's now seen the error of his ways because "they worked" only further calls into question his judgment. After all, tax cuts ALWAYS work. They worked when JFK cut taxes and they worked when Reagan cut taxes and they worked when Bush cut taxes. McCain's insults are just the icing on the cake.

Romney shares McCain's understanding that we are in a war against Islamic fascists -- something the Democrats don't get (for that would be "racist"). He is also more likely to appoint the right judges.

I like Mike Huckabee personally. He's engaging. He is straight-forward, just like a guy who has nothing to lose and, of course, it's because he has nothing to lose. I'm not thrilled that he is running interference for McCain, perhaps in the hopes of being asked to be McCain's number two or perhaps just for his ego.

But Huckabee's continued quixotic quest means that McCain would not even win the Republican nomination if he weren't playing tag-team with McCain,

I think Romney's vigor, experience (McCain has never run a business or been in the position of running a state) and demeanor make him a better candidate than the elderly and battered McCain whose flip-flops are not only more than any that could be said about Romney, but far harder to explain.

Romney is far from the perfect candidate in my book. But in every way he's better than McCain. I will, of course, support McCain with all of my heart if he's head-to-head with people I recognize will destroy this country with their socialist agenda, their international cowardess and their disdain for the American people. But this race is far from over and, for all of the reasons listed above and more, I ask that you vote for Mitt Romney on Tuesday and beyond.

Ooh, Evan...you are so right about McCain...and so preternaturally lucid as usual. Are you married, Evan...tee hee? As Anne Coulter says:...on the litmus issues of our time, only partially excluding Iraq, he is a liberal. He apparently excoriated Samuel Alito as too "conservative." He promoted amnesty for 20 million illegal immigrants. He abridged free citizen speech (in favor of the media) with McCain-Feingold.

He opposes [drilling in] ANWR and supports the global warming cult, even posturing with fellow mountebank Arnold Schwarzenegger in front of solar panels. Yes, he supported the surge, along with every other Republican worth mentioning, but he would shut down Guantanamo — the most successful rat trap in our nation's anti-terror fight — and he joins Code Pink in calling the Bush administration "torturers."

Oh yeah, he originally voted against the Bush tax cuts, but now says he would support them. And he libels our miraculous drug companies as "crooks." Can I take a breath?

But, Evan, what do you think about the hatred all the other candidates have for Mitt? I so love his nickname, Mittens...just adorable. And, he's such a fine, handsome looking man...right out of central casting as they say. But I must admit, he's flipped 190 degrees on almost every thing dear to me. I hate to differ with you as I have hopes for meeting you one day, but I really can't feel totally trusting in the man...despite his marvelous jaw line...be still my heart. Am I blushing?

vixen,

How can you even think about men when there are so many real full-figured women like me around. Believe me, once you've had a real woman like Hillary, you'll never go back.

Besides, I know you're really hot for hill, like me!

Our party is about to be destroyed by a closet liberal, John McCain. I don't think he is stoppable now and on top of everything else he is not a beautiful man like so many of our magnificent conservative men are...Mitt and Fred Thompson who is a movie actor are good examples...just my opinion.

Richard Nixon was also a very good looking man with his dark brooding qualities. Mike Huckabee is another man who is not very good looking though.

Amen! If you're voting based on conservative principles, Romney is the best man for the job. There will be many conservatives sitting this one out if McCain is nominated, at least thats the feeling I get. However, I stand with you - McCain is much better than Hillary or Obama.

That's an outlandish interpretation. I think the biggest thing to fear with Obama is the result of his administration pulling our troops from Iraq. If that happens, I foresee not only more terror attacks here at home, but a complete mess in the middle east that may actually cause a war of a much larger scale than Iraq is today. If Barak Chamberlain is elected and fulfills his radical leftist agenda, we will be in serious need of a Churchill to clean up his mess.

If we pull out of Iraq there will be, within weeks, suitcase nukes detonated in all major American cities and some smaller ones too like Omaha and Boise and Montgomery. Bank on it. Not only do we need to stay in Iraq, but we need to colonize it and turn it into the 51st state because, really, it's either that or we're all dead.

Anonymous said...

Heck, let's just pull out of Iraq now. It'll be great fun watching the Islamic extremists kill all the dingbats Bush put into place in Iraq's government along with those who were foolish enough to fight against al quaeda. And once Moqtada al Sadr takes over and the oil money starts flowing again, it'll be amusing to see a fully trained 400,000 man mujahadeen army show up at the Taliban's side in the mountains of Afghanistan! Then we can blame Bush for stupidly starting the war in Afghanistan, too!

Who cares if millions die. After all, that's what we did to Vietnam in 1975, when Congress cut off funds and 2.5 million South Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian gooks bit the dust.

Moody-Stuart, who is currently chairman of mining group Anglo American, added that the EU was too lax with motor manufacturers and insisted that wealthier people must play their part in tackling climate change.

It's hard to stay positive when a backstabbing liberal turncoat like McCain is leading in the republican primaries.

I foresee 4-8 years of democrat rule in the near future. I am thinking, mostly because of hurt pride, to vote for Hillary. At least then the new liberal policies sent through congress will not be labeled as "Republican Policies" like No Child Left Behind was. We need a conservative in the government, but it may take 4 years of Clinton or Obama to get it.

Besides, McCain doesn't stand a chance in a race against Hillary or Obama. He's a psycho-babbler with a very checkered past. He stabbed his first wife in the back after getting back from 'nam just like he stabs his fellow republicans in the back in congress almost every day. It's a sad time for out nation.

Yeah, and INSIST upon a socially AND fiscally conservative candidate instead of a pack of quasi-liberal shills the likes of Romney (can you spell Massachusetts?) and Huckabee (what color is the US dollar?).

The only saving grace is that the DNC is over-reaching to the Left and will nominate Shrillary. And unless Obama is her running mate, even Romney will be able to snuff her out. He, at least, has "Independent" appeal.

This would include idiots like Sayet who, given the state of his blog, with its three or four really simple dick followers and the libs who've found this side show, has decided to lay low and hope for better times when he comes out of his pod in a few years. What else can he fail at? tee hee...

How did we go from almost total control and the chance to completely fill the judiciary with constitutionally correct, conservative judges to the bottom of the barrel overnight? Rush says he will not slacken in his attacks on McCain...the party seems to have fallen completely apart. The sidelines might be alright for a while but for one deadly problem...they will be putting in liberal activist justices as fast as they can for at least four years. A chance like we blew here will not come again for decades. Who is to blame for this?

Had a chance to shake Mitt's hand at the last big campaign rally in Long Beach Feb. 4th. He was the last truly sane grownup in the presidential race of 08. By then, he had finally attained a level of clarity in understanding & identifying the issues & problems while communicating practical solutions. In that speech all he needed to do was site McCain's record of selfish legislative betrayals, and the O.C. audience went wild: McCain – Feingold (Stifling Political Speech), Mc Cain – Kennedy (Amnesty and Free Gifts for Aliens), The Gang of 14 (Filibuster of Originalist Judges), McCain - Lieberman (Energy Tax). Shaking his hand, I said, “You had me at McCain -Fiengold”.

What I would have given to see him in front of a general election audience for a two-person debate unmasking either of the phonies on the other side. Sadly, because of the machinations of cabinet job seeking Republican Party machine hacks & sellouts, he was never given that ultimate forum for the display of superior ideas grounded in reality and truth. When, in such a forum, the truth goes on display in contrast to the deceptions of liberalism as sugar coated in the shallow liberal media, the truth wins. This was how Reagan bypassed the lib media and won by speaking the truth directly to us in debate and speeches. Not fully grounded in the philosophical convictions we cherish, McCain will have a great deal of difficulty articulating our reasoning even if he magically reforms to embrace a smattering of important conservative principals.

When you have the forum of a media book tour, I hope you will make full use of it & remember that every word counts in articulating the truth. Remember, the other side relies upon deception and ignorance in repetition. All you have to do is speak the truth and educate repeatedly.

What a moment! Having learned nothing from the Left's Bush Derangement Syndrome, the conservative movement's big talkers spent the days before Super Tuesday indulging in a fiery display of McCain Derangement Syndrome. For some of these folks, this is what medical insurance providers might call a preexisting condition, always on the verge of flaring up. Republican voters were more sensible. They went for McCain, selecting the most electable and impressive candidate. The conservative movement is licking its wounds, but will recover.

It was an unattractive few weeks. In the rush to damn McCain, the movement paid obeisance to some dubious advisers. It listened to the pronouncements of Tom DeLay, who had previously done so much to convince his countrymen that conservatives could not be trusted to govern. It hearkened to the political counsel of Rick Santorum, who lost his Senate seat in the swing state of Pennsylvania two years ago by 17 percentage points. It took seriously the aspersions of James Dobson, whose "conscience" does not permit him to vote for John McCain.

Well, movements are .  .  . movements after all. They tend to march to the beat of the loudest drums. Still, it does seem that many self-proclaimed movement leaders have managed the impressive feat of sounding at once hysterical and tedious. But odds are most will soon reconcile themselves to McCain. The fact is, ordinary American conservatives already are reconciled. Some are enthusiastic. And movement leaders are good at racing to the head of a parade when they see their "followers" marching
by.

Here's the good news--and it's really quite good. A reasonably conservative presidential candidate, leading a reasonably conservative party, has a good chance to win the general election. With a difficult task ahead of it--holding on to the White House for a third term, and in this case for the sixth out of the last eight--the GOP has lucked into having as its nominee John McCain, one of the most popular politicians in America.

What's more, conservatism as a set of ideas is in pretty good shape. "Neoconservative" thinking on America's place in the world has beaten back attempts to revive the crabbed "realism" of some congressional Republicans in the 1990s as a plausible approach for dealing with the world of the 21st century. And there is a resurgence of creative thinking on domestic policy, reminiscent of the neoconservatism of an earlier generation. Younger conservatives are displaying a welcome heterodoxy in their approach to health care, taxes, and family policy issues.

The really tragic thing about the Democratic surrender on Iraq is that it's now all but guaranteed that the war will be off the table during the presidential campaign. Once again — it happened in 2002, 2004 and 2006 — the Democrats have essentially decided to rely on the voters to give them credit for being anti-war, despite the fact that, for all the noise they've made to the contrary, in the end they've done nothing but vote for war and cough up every dime they've been asked to give, every step of the way.

Even beyond the war, the Democrats have repeatedly gone limp-dick every time the Bush administration so much as raises its voice. Most recently, twelve Democrats crossed the aisle to grant immunity to phone companies who participated in Bush's notorious wiretapping program. Before that, Democrats caved in and confirmed Mike Mukasey as attorney general after he kept his middle finger extended and refused to condemn waterboarding as torture. Democrats fattened by Wall Street also got cold feet about upsetting the country's gazillionaires, refusing to close a tax loophole that rewarded hedge-fund managers with a tax rate less than half that paid by ordinary citizens.

But the war is where they showed their real mettle. Before the 2006 elections, Democrats told us we could expect more specifics on their war plans after Election Day. Nearly two years have passed since then, and now they are once again telling us to wait until after an election to see real action to stop the war. In the meantime, of course, we're to remember that they're the good guys, the Republicans are the real enemy, and, well, go Hillary! Semper fi! Yay, team!

How much of this bullshit are we going to take? How long are we supposed to give the Reids and Pelosis and Hillarys of the world credit for wanting, deep down in their moldy hearts, to do the right thing?

Look, fuck your hearts, OK? Just get it done. Because if you don't, sooner or later this con is going to run dry. It may not be in '08, but it'll be soon. Even Americans can't be fooled forever.
